The Quality of Copper
Copper is considered by many as the ultimate roofing material simply because of its unsurpassed durability, beauty, and value. Copper is the only roofing material, which as it ages, improves. This aging process is know as patina, and is a greenish sheen that is the result of oxidation. Unlike most metals, when copper ages this color change enhances its appearance, and also protects the metal from further corrosion. Copper is also one of the only metals that products produced hundreds of years ago are still in use. In addition, copper is also 100% recyclable. In fact, the majority of all architectural copper used today has an approximately 75% recycled content, making copper the best choice to protect the environment. If you still doubt copper's durability, think of this. For over one hundred years of biting sea winds, pounding rains, snow, and blazing sun, the copper covering of the Statue of Liberty has grown more beautiful and has remained virtually intact all this time. While staring at the Statues magnificent green patina you will be amazed to learn that weathering and oxidation of the copper skin has only amounted to 0.005 of an inch in the past century. It is for this reason that the copper skin was one of the few parts of the Statue, which did not require significant rebuilding or replacing when the Statue was renovated. In fact, the torch section was the only copper part of the Statue that required renovation. The torch was rebuilt with new copper and patinated before installation to match the existing copper. The Statue of Liberty is a testimony to coppers unique ability to withstand the elements of time.
