All about Copper Flashing
According to the Merriam-Websters Online Dictionary, flashing is sheet metal used in the reinforcement and weatherproofing of roof joints and angles. However, copper is a more durable material that provides the same layer of protection from leaks. In addition, over time copper flashing will take on a greenish patina when exposed to air, give it a more decorative appeal. Flashing has to be installed over areas of the roof where shingles alone will not provide protection against water seepage. These areas include ridges, valleys, as well as areas around any vents, air conditioners, fans, and skylights. In addition, flashing should also be used on the eaves where the roof meets the gutter system along the perimeter of the house. When flashing is properly installed, it prevents water damage caused by precipitation, which gets underneath the shingles. Copper flashing is a more expensive than galvanized steel or even aluminum. However, because it is a more durable metal it is worth the expense. Because copper is a softer metal, it is easier to form and bend into the proper shape. This also means that many installers
aren't required to have special tools to work with copper. Another benefit of copper is that it can be shaped by a variety of different methods. Copper can be trimmed, or formed with molds to create unusual shapes. In addition, copper can also be soldered to create watertight tile patterns.
