Copper Shingles

Copper is a rich warm metal that is loved by many around the world. This beautiful metal has been used for years as a roofing material. There are basically two varieties of copper roofing, which you can purchase. The first is solid copper roofing, which is comprised of a solid copper sheet. Solid copper roofing is extremely resilient to weathering and has been known to provide decades of protection. However, solid copper roofing is incredibly expensive. The second type of copper roofing is copper roof shingles, which are made by attaching copper sheeting to asphalt shingles. Both solid and copper shingles will age and weather turning that magnificent verdigris green.

Copper roof shingles are not only extremely durable and long lasting, but they are also much lighter than most traditional roofing materials. However, copper roof shingles are also expensive. The average cost of copper shingles is approximately $4 per square foot, whereas the average cost of asphalt shingles is approximately $1 per square foot, and solid copper shingles cost approximately $15 per square foot.

Copper shingles roofs have been known to last 150 years. Whereas premium quality asphalt roofing shingles usually only last approximately 20 years. However, copper-sheeting shingles will only last as long as the asphalt shingles underneath, but the copper does extended the life of the shingles to approximately 30 or 40 years. This is because the copper sheeting protects the asphalt shingles from wear and tear brought on by the elements.

When you compare the durability of copper with that of standard asphalt shingles, youll soon see that copper shingles is the best choice.
