Tips on Hiring a Roofing Contractor
The best and simplest way to assess the quality of any contractor's work is to ask for references and check these references by looking at his work. This also goes for choosing a roofing contractor. Many contractors will gladly provide you with a list of references, however, keep in mind that these references are the ones that the contractor believes will speak well of his/her work. When you look over these references, make sure that you check the ones that are a few years old. This will allow you to evaluate the durability of the construction work. As important as it is to find a contractor whom does quality work, it is also important to find a contractor who you are comfortable to have to work for you. It is also important to realize that some contractors may be just starting out in the business and may not have many references to provide for you. If the contractor doses not have references, you can contact the Better Business Bureau in your area to see if there have been any complaints filed against the contractor. You also need to verify that the contractor is insured with both a workers compensation policy and liability coverage, otherwise you may be liable for any injuries that any workers sustain while working on your home. It is important to also understand that many manufacturers specially train contractors who install their product. For this reason, when having a metal roof installed, you may be able to find several contractors simply by first contacting the manufacturer. You also want to discuss if the contractor warranties his/her work against any faults. You also want to make sure that you receive a written estimate that includes a complete list of all materials that will be used as well as manufacturers' warranties. The estimate you receive should include cost of materials, the costs of tear-off, (removal of the old roof) or any prep-work for a lay over (placing of new shingles over existing shingles), as well as the costs of permits and clean up. This way you will reduce the chance of any surprise or hidden cost, or materials. Lastly, if your roofing job requires a specialist, then contact the manufacturer for a list of specially trained installers who have done a similar type of job. When you have a metal roof installed on your home, you are making an investment in your home that will bring your years of great rewards.
