Installing a Metal Roof, is Not Your Typical DIY Project

If you have it in your mind that you are going to completely re-roof your home with a metal roof in a single weekend, then you must be an expert. FACT: Installing a metal roofing is not your average do-it-yourself weekend project. Before you tackle installing your new roof, you first need the required assortment of tools, accessories, and learn the special techniques, which only a professional installer can teach you. While doing the research for this article, I realized that proper installation involves more than just nailing down the panels. It also involves knowing and following detailed instructions on how to properly install roofing gable channels, valleys, eaves, edge trim, and the list goes on, not to mention the fact that every manufacturers installation instructions will vary somewhat, from manufacturer to manufacturer. All of this the professional installer understands and knows.

Therefore, we strongly suggest that you hire a contractor to install any moderate to complex style metal roof. Believe it or not, this will save you both time and money in the long run. When hiring a contractor, you want one who has substantial experience installing metal roofs, particularly with the product you've chosen. In addition, it is always best to choose a contractor who has also been trained by the manufacturer and who warranties his/her work. Not every metal roofs is installed in the same manner, in fact depending on the style chosen, installation methods can vary within a particular brand. You also want to make sure that you check all of your installer's references, not just the first one or two. Because accidents can happen, you also want to make sure that the contractor has all the proper licensing and insurance to work on your home.

Not to sound like Im repeating myself, but installing a metal roof should be left to a professional installer, as it is an extremely challenging, professional-grade job. However, I also realize that there are some of us who look forward to such a challenge. Therefore, if you can and will, carefully read and follow the manufactures instructions and have either purchased or rented the entire necessary assortment of tools needed, then you might be able to successfully install a simple continuous-seam metal roof.

When installing a metal roof it is rarely only one piece. It is in fact, several pieces of the same metal. In addition, there are always numerous special pieces such as starting strips, clips, edge pieces, caps, etc. All of which, make up your total roofing system. Do not mix and match components from one system with another system. Do not attempt to cut corners or save money by fabricating your own pieces and parts. Do use precisely what the manufacturer instructs you to use. Once you have successfully installed your metal roof, DO NOT throw away your installation instructions. You may need them to do repairs.

Failure to follow these instructions will void your warranty.
