Metal Roof Coatings

There are several reasons why you should use metal roof coatings; to start with, they can prolong the life of your roof. Metal roof coatings can waterproof your roof, stop UV degradation, as well as corrosion, provided added insulation for under roof area, reduce up to 92% of thermal shock to your metal roof.

You need to annually check your roof for damage. Just because it hasnt started to leak havent doesn't mean there isnt deterioration. You also need to check your roof after storms and remove any debris or branches that may have been deposited on your roof. You need to inspect your roof for blisters, cracked seams, and peeling roof coating. Remember it is always cheaper to repair small problems then it is to repair large ones.

If your roof needs coating, make sure that your purchase a top quality roof coating. When purchasing your roof coating, consider buying a reflective color such as white rather than gray, especially if you live in a warmer climate. Lighter colored coatings will reflect the sun's UV rays, thus reduce your cooling costs.

You want to make sure that you check the forecast before you start, to ensure that it isnt going to rain and that the temperature remains over 50 degrees F as low temperatures or an increase in humidity will have negative affects on the curing process.

To coat your metal roof you will need the following materials: roof coating, patching cement, diluted chlorine bleach solution, detergent, wire brush, putty knife, coarse sandpaper, stiff-bristle paint brush, paint roller, broom, garden hose, and a roof-coating brush.

You want to use the wire brush, coarse sandpaper and/or putty knife to remove any of the old flaking roof coating, making sure that you pay close attention to the seals around the j-rail, roof seams and flashing. It is vital that you have a clean dry surface before applying the new roof coating. Sweep away all the loose paint and debris. Next, using the bleach and detergent, clean your roof, scrubbing away any mold and mildew. Rinse the roof off and allow the roof to completely dry before applying the coating. You want to make sure that you follow the manufacturers instructions when applying the coating. Do not thin out the coating and do not apply too thick of a coat as this will not provide added protection, but will cause the coating to crack.

Once the coating has completely dried, your metal roof will be waterproofed, protected against UV degradation, and corrosion, extending the life of your roof.
